CFD stands for "Computational Fluid Dynamics". This means numerical fluid mechanics or flow simulation.

The use of CFD offers a number of advantages. For example, the number of test series can be drastically reduced. This means enormous time and cost savings.

Of course, CFD calculations are not limited to nozzle technology! Rather, almost all questions related to fluid mechanics can be solved. Mass and heat transfer processes can also be calculated.

CFD is by no means simply a substitute for dimensional analysis or similarity theory. Rather, they are two fundamentally different tools. However, they can complement each other in an excellent way!

CFD - Advantages and disadvantages of this method.

To gain information at each point of an even complex flow field simulation is certainly one of the main advantages and strengths of a CFD calculation. It is also possible to display flow phenomena that cannot be investigated experimentally. Either because the flow contour to be examined or optimised is too small or, for example, large volume flows are far too extensive for laboratory scales.

Flow conditions can also be determined at critical points that do not allow the use of probes or the like.

Special effects or fluidic conditions can be viewed and resolved in isolation.

This means that even very small geometries can be precisely examined, displayed and optimized.

Existing CAD data can of course be used for the CFD. After modification or optimization, models can be developed quickly through fast and cost-effective 3-D printing processes.

Prototypes can be created visually and examined in more detail. Geometric or fluidic changes can thus be quickly assessed.

Of course there are also some disadvantages and sources of error. However, these can be avoided with the appropriate know-how!

If the boundary conditions and the underlying model are selected incorrectly or unfavourably, unrealistic results are calculated.

Is a CFD calculation usefull for me?

Does  CFD make sense to me?

We - and others - cannot answer this question across the board and in general. Which of the available methods is particularly favourable and constructive can only be decided individually! And only when the task and the goals are known.

However, it must always be taken into account that results from CFD calculations as well as from similarity theory investigations must always be verified. Here too, the individual processes have specific advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, in our opinion, no generally valid recommendation can be made in advance for one or the other procedure.

If it comes to an unfavourable or wrong choice of method, this costs a loss of time and money. In order to avoid exactly this, we only make recommendations after we have comprehensively analysed and discussed the task with you.
